On Wednesday 18 September 2024, Senior Research Fellow and NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow, Dr Jessica Orchard, explored the concept of "athlete's heart", detailing the electrical, structural, and functional cardiac changes associated with intense exercise. She discussed how these changes can vary based on factors such as sex, sport type, and genetics, and how there can be a grey zone where athlete's heart overlaps with cardiac pathology.
Jessica also presented on sex differences in sports cardiology, and highlighted key strategies for prevention of cardiac emergencies in sport, including screening, cardiac emergency preparation and improving cardiac awareness across all sports.
This session was tailored for physicians, physiologists, sports scientists, physiotherapists, dieticians, sports trainers, and researchers. It was facilitated by SMA NSW State Council member and physiotherapist, Michael Lewis.
