The AIS Parenthood Recommendations: Best practice policy and practice recommendations for supporting athletes through preconception to parenthood: A guide for Australian sporting organisations.

Sport and motherhood are no longer mutually exclusive, with many athletes are now training throughout their pregnancy and returning to sport postpartum. Emerging research provides critical insight into the biopsychosocial considerations that play a vital role in an athlete’s journey through preconception to parenthood. A significant barrier identified is a lack of organisational support. Given the significance of keeping women in sport, best practice policy and practice recommendations for supporting athletes through preconception to parenthood were developed for sporting organisations to provide supportive environments for these athletes.
This webinar showcased the recently released 2025 Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) best practice policy and practice recommendations for supporting athletes through preconception to parenthood. Kaitlyn Fassina shared her journey as a mum-athlete. Rachel Harris, shared the multifaceted challenges female athletes face, from fertility to juggling training with newborn feeding schedules. Melanie Hayman detailed the extensive research process involved in developing the recommendations and provide operational guidance for sport organisations and administrators. Kaitlyn closed by highlighting the significance of the recommendations on female sport nationally and internationally.
This event is best suited for Sports Drs, Physiotherapists, Exercise Physiologists, Sports and Exercise Scientists as well as anyone working with athletes during preconception, pregnancy, postpartum and parenthood.
